Bangtan Boys Wiki/Bio
BTS (Bangtan Boys) is a seven-member South Korean boy band that formed in 2010 and debuted in 2013 under the Big Hit Entertainment label. Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V, and Jungkook are part of a septet that co-writes and co-produces a lot of their own material. Their musical approach has expanded to incorporate a wide spectrum of genres after beginning as a hip hop ensemble. Their songs, which are frequently centred on personal and social commentary, address issues such as mental health, adolescent problems and coming-of-age, loss, the road toward self-love, and individualism. Their work includes connections to literature and psychological issues, as well as a tale set in an alternate dimension.
BTS debuted in 2013 with their single album 2 Cool 4 Skool, and in 2014, they released Dark & Wild, their first Korean-language studio album, and Wake Up, their first Japanese-language studio album. Wings (2016), the group’s second Korean studio album, was their first to sell one million copies in the country. BTS had entered the worldwide music market by 2017, driving the Korean Wave into the United States and breaking multiple sales records. They became the first Korean act to top the US Billboard 200 list with their studio album Love Yourself: Tears, as well as the first Korean act to get a certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for their single “Mic Drop” (2018) Bangtan Sonyeondan (Hanja: literally “Bulletproof Boy Scouts”) is the group’s name, which is derived from the Korean term Bangtan Sonyeondan (Hanja: literally “Bulletproof Boy Scouts”). The name, according to member J-Hope, represents the group’s intention to “block off prejudices, critiques, and expectations that aim like bullets at adolescents.” They are known in Japan as Bdan Shnendan, which translates as “Bdan Shnendan.” As part of their new brand identity, BTS stated in July 2017 that their name would also stand for “Beyond the Scene.” This changed their name to “developing youth BTS who is moving forward and beyond the realities they are facing.”
BTS was formed in 2010 after Bang Si-hyuk, the CEO of Big Hit Entertainment, met with group leader RM and was pleased by his rapping. Bang Si-hyuk decided that the current young required “a hero who can lend them a shoulder to lean on, even without speaking a single word” between their initial formation and debut. Before their debut was postponed and the group was restructured into a more traditional idol group, the group was featured on multiple singles by artists such as 2AM and Lee Seung-gi. BTS released their first single album 2 Cool 4 Skool, the first leg of their “school trilogy” series, on June 12, 2013, alongside the lead track “No More Dream,” which reached number 124 in Korea before swiftly sliding off the charts. Despite reaching number five in South Korea and selling over 145,000 copies, the album was not a big hit, selling only 24,000 copies in 2013. The following single, “We Are Bulletproof Pt. 2,” did not chart. BTS used an old-school hip-hop tune with scratches from the 1980s–90s and highly harsh visuals in 2 Cool 4 Skool.
The EP Skool Luv Affair, the final act in their “school trilogy,” was released in January 2014 and quickly rose to the top of the Gaon Album Chart, selling 100,000 copies in 2014 and over 250,000 by 2018. It was also BTS’ debut appearance on Billboard’s World Albums Chart, with a third-place finish. The singles “Boy in Luv” and “Just One Day,” which charted at number 45 and 149 in Korea, respectively, helped to promote the album. While Skool Luv Affair incorporated R&B and hard rock into their hip-hop inspirations, the album coincided with a thematic shift from dreams and happiness to love, focused on school-age and youthful love.
BTS released an original eight-episode documentary series called Burn the Stage, which ran from March to May 2018 exclusively on YouTube Premium and gave fans a behind-the-scenes peek at the group’s 2017 Wings Tour. Face Yourself, the group’s third Japanese studio album, was released in April and debuted at number 43 on the Billboard 200, making it the third-highest-charting Japanese album in the chart’s history. The group created a nine-minute short film named “Euphoria: Theme of Love Yourself: Wonder” in connection with the publication of Face Yourself, which featured the song “Euphoria” and embodied the or “beginning” of the narrative sequence. BTS released Love Yourself: Tear, their third Korean-language studio album, in May 2018 to coincide with their performance at the 25th Billboard Music Awards. BTS debuted as performers at the programme with the release of their lead single, “Fake Love,” and won Top Social Artist for the second year in a row, marking them the only Korean artist to do so. The album corresponded to the series’ or “turn” in the narrative sequence, touching on the arduous enlightenment of loving without being loved and encouragement to people without dreams.
