Bruce Belland Biography

Rev. Stanley G. Belland, a Fundamentalist Minister with a thriving congregation on Chicago’s Northwest Side, and his talented young wife Hertha… a Gospel radio singer, voice coach, and choir director… gave birth to Bruce Gerald Belland on October 22nd, 1936 in Chicago, Illinois.

At the age of four, he sung his first solo in a morning worship service. He received a standing ovation, a stick of chewing gum, and warm applause from his grateful parents for his performance of “God Bless America.”

The gum, the hugs, and the parental pride heaped on him by the congregation convinced him that he wanted to be a singer right then and there.I’m not a firefighter. Not a fighter pilot, to be sure.

Not even for his favourite Chicago Cubs, where he plays shortstop.A performer. At the age of four, he made up his mind to pursue his passion, and he never looked back.

He spent many hours as a boy listening to Bing Crosby and The Mills Brothers on the radio or practising at the piano with his supportive and always encouraging Mother “while supper burned on the stove.”

In 1946, he was ten years old and the prospect of a musical career beckoned. His family relocated to Hollywood, where his father took over as pastor of the West Hollywood Community Church, a blue-collar, working-class neighbourhood just blocks from the Sunset Strip and near to opulent Beverly Hills.

Bruce Belland Career

Bruce honed his vocal skills in his adolescent years, singing in his Mother’s church choir and at his Father’s numerous funerals.“Other Fathers brought their son fishing or to a baseball game,” Bruce says. Dad and I dug graves.”

Still, he assured himself, it was a type of “performance” and would have to suffice… for the time being. His Father’s ardent drive to nurture his son for a profession as a Gospel singer was fueled by that early partnership.Bruce’s Fatherly obsession grows stronger throughout his adolescence, culminating in a heartbreaking battle with the Father he admires but refuses to mimic.

He carried newspapers to scores of celebrities “over the tracks” in Beverly Hills as a star-struck 15-year-old… Jimmy Stewart, Gene Kelly, Jimmy Durante, Danny Kaye, Ira Gershwin, Danny Thomas, Zsa Zsa Gabor, George Burns, Harpo Marx, and Rosalind Russell are among the stars who have appeared in the film. Witnessing their extravagant lifestyle further encouraged Bruce’s desire to pursue a career in show business.

On his delivery route through Beverly Hills’ affluent streets, he began to have firsthand contacts with world-famous celebrities, which he tried to facilitate at every chance.

One well-known Oscar winner even took the time to show him how to fold and hurl a newspaper correctly. When he came out of his bathrobe and slippers to get his newspaper, another cherished old radio celebrity would converse with him. Then, at school, more show business concepts were introduced.

His well-intentioned Father feared his pint-sized kid would be bullied at the local junior high, which had a shady reputation, after he graduated from West Hollywood Elementary. So the Reverend worked some strings and got Bruce enrolled at Emerson Junior High in West Los Angeles. It was a crucial decision.

Emerson’s student body was made up of well-to-do adolescents from the affluent neighbourhoods of Bel Air, Brentwood, and Westwood. With his secondhand clothes, tiny stature, and white-blond hair, he was an easy target for the school bullies.

To defuse a difficult situation, he quickly learned sarcastic impersonations of a few unpopular professors, which he used to make the bullies – and others – laugh.

Other formative experiences would be provided by Emerson. He was mentored and supported by the school’s loving music teacher and an inspiring female English teacher, who even predicted that he’d “win a Pulitzer someday.”

Bobby Driscoll, Hollywood’s biggest child star since Shirley Temple, was among Bruce’s junior high classmates, including future star Robert Redford.

Bruce describes how he witnessed the sensitive young Driscoll attempting to have a regular school life but instead wreaking havoc wherever he tried to fit in on campus.(After two tumultuous weeks at Emerson, Driscoll faced reality and enrolled in a business school for children.) He’d die of a heroin overdose at the age of 30, a has-been.)

Bruce was realising that stardom wasn’t all glitz and glory, but that didn’t stop him from chasing his ambition. The trendy Sunset Strip nightclubs, only streets from his family’s modest parsonage, oozed excitement. He used to sneak out of the house after his parents had gone to bed and charm his way backstage at the glitzy showrooms along the Strip when he was a teenager.

He quickly became a “mascot” for the tech staff at each opulent club, and he remained backstage night after night, observing many of the era’s greatest nightclub performers.Jerry Lewis’ madcap comedic approach greatly influenced Bruce’s early onstage antics, as did Nat “King” Cole, Jimmy Durante, The Andrews Sister, Tony Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Billy Daniels, Judy Garland, Pearl Bailey, Danny Kaye, and Martin & Lewis.

It would be a priceless preparation for what was to come.He was now singing along with The Four Freshmen, and he was growing increasingly enamoured with the sound of voices mixing in harmony.

His goal quickly concentrated on having a recording career in a tight harmony singing group after sneaking backstage at Ciro’s one night and hearing his favourites the Mills Brothers. He was also starting to write original songs and poems for various church events.

Bruce enrolled at famous Hollywood High School in 1952, a desire he had had since he moved from Chicago as a 10-year-old.He was a showbiz fanatic who was well-versed in the school’s history. Mickey Rooney, Judy Garland, and Lana Turner, as well as his older brother Stanton, whom he admired, were all present.
