Carol Burnett is a well-known American comic and actress. She is unquestionably one of the most prominent figures in the television entertainment industry because of her leading role on the long-running variety program “The Carol Burnett Show.”

Carol Creighton Burnett was born on April 26, 1933, in San Antonio, Texas, to parents Joseph Thomas Burnett and Ina Louise. He was the manager of a movie theatre, and her mother was a public relations specialist. Burnett had a difficult upbringing. Her father and mother were alcoholics. After their divorce, Burnett was raised by her maternal grandmother, who instilled in her a lifelong appreciation of the cinematic arts from an early age.

The year was 1951 when she completed her high school education at Hollywood High School. The next step in her education was taking a journalism course at the University of California in Los Angeles. After her freshman year, she decided to major in theatre and English. In order to get accepted into a playwright program, Burnett had to first take an acting class. She reluctantly agreed to participate, but she quickly became enamored and chose to pursue acting as a career.

Since graduating from college, she has been a part of a number of university theatrical groups and performances. She realized her innate comedy timing and musical ability with each performance. Despite her mother’s disapproval, she persisted in following her newfound dream of being an actress.

Relationship

Burnett married Don Saroyan in 1955, but the marriage ended in divorce in 1962. She married Joe Hamilton, a television producer, in 1965. Carrie Hamilton, Jody Hamilton, and Erin Hamilton were the couple’s three daughters. After a divorce in 1984, the two remarried.

In 2001, she tied the knot with Brian Miller, a man 23 years younger than she was at the time. The Hollywood Bowl Orchestra’s lead drummer, he also serves as a contractor.

Career

She moved to the Big Apple in 1954. Her big break came in 1955 when she appeared in the famous children’s television program, ‘The Paul Winchell and Jerry Mahoney Show,’ as the girlfriend of a ventriloquist’s dummy. Buddy Hackett’s girlfriend in the NBC comedy, ‘Stanley’, was played by her in 1956. Burnett began performing in New York’s cabarets and nightclubs as a result of its untimely end. While she was in this role, she gave a hilarious version of the novelty song “I Made A Fool of Myself.”

She appeared on Jack Paar’s ‘The Tonight Show’ and ‘The Ed Sullivan Show’ throughout the night in 1957. As part of television’s early game program “Pantomine Quiz,” she made her first appearance. She had a tremendous fan base on television, but it wasn’t until she made her Broadway debut that she became a household name. Her role as Princess Winnifred in ‘Once Upon a Mattress,’ a 1959 Broadway musical comedy, garnered her a Tony Award nomination for Best Actress.

Garry Moore’s renowned variety show, ‘The Garry Moore Show’, ran from 1959 until 1962. She had a variety of personas to choose from for the program, but her most memorable performance was as a put-up cleaning lady, which she later adopted as she alter ego. During the same year, she received an award for Outstanding Performance in a Variety or Musical Program/Series.

It was the Moore Show’s amazing popularity that made Burnett a household name. She continued to build on her triumph by starring with Julie Andrews in “Julie and Carol at Carnegia Hall,” which earned her a second Emmy nomination for her performance. She featured as a guest star on a number of programs during this time period.

She made her feature film debut in ‘Who’s Been Sleeping in My Bed?’ released in 1963. She featured Elizabeth Montgomery and Dean Martin in a light-hearted comedy. For the Broadway musical, “Fade Out-Fade In,” she appeared for just a few weeks in 1964 owing to neck injuries. Only one season of the variety show ‘The Entertainers’ was left after she returned to the show for a short time.

Carol & Company, Magnum, PI, Touched by an Angel, Mad About You, and Desperate Housewives were among the various series she appeared on in the 1990s.
