Lumen Technologies (previously CenturyLink) is a Monroe, Louisiana-based telecommunications business that provides communications, network services, security, cloud solutions, voice, and managed services. The firm is a Fortune 500 corporation and a member of the S&P 500 index. Local and long-distance voice, broadband, MPLS, private line (including special access), Ethernet, hosting (including cloud hosting and managed hosting), data integration, video, network, public access, Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), information technology, and other ancillary services are among the company’s communications services. Lumen’s forerunner was the Oak Ridge Telephone Company, which was founded by F. E. Hogan, Sr. and was based in Oak Ridge, Louisiana. Hogan sold the firm to William Clarke and Marie Williams for $500 in 1930, with 75 paying customers. They relocated the switchboard to the front parlour of the Williams household. Clarke McRae Williams, the Williams’ son, got ownership of the family’s telephone company as a wedding gift in 1946. Clarke Williams found out in 1947 that the telephone business in Marion, Louisiana was for sale. Clarke bought the Marion Telephone Firm with a loan from a business friend, Joe Sydney Carter, and later made it his base of operations as he developed his company via further acquisitions.
With 10,000 access lines, Oak Ridge Telephone Company covered three states by 1967. The firm was renamed Central Telephone and Electronics in that year. President and chairman of the board of directors was Clarke M. Williams. Clarke progressively relocated his offices from Marion to Monroe, Louisiana, between 1972 and 1975, in order to access a bigger staff base and be closer to the airport. Century Telephone Enterprises, Inc. was renamed Century Telephone Enterprises, Inc. in 1971. Century Telephone purchased the Wisconsin-based La Crosse Telephone Corporation in 1972. Century Telephone originally listed on the New York Stock Exchange on October 24, 1978, and began trading under the ticker symbol CTL. Century Telephone paid $135 million for Central Telephone Company of Ohio, a Centel affiliate, in 1992. Century gained more than 65,000 access lines as a result of the transaction, accounting for 20% of the company’s total access lines. Glen F. Post III was designated Chief Executive Officer and Vice Chairman of the Board of Century Telephone in the same year. Century Telephone’s revenues topped $425 million in 1993, up from over $350 million in 1992. Including a roughly $16 million charge in 1992 owing to the cumulative effect of an accounting reform that year, earnings in 1993 were over $80 million, up from about $70 million in 1992. Century Telephone Enterprises was included in the S&P MidCap 400 index in 1995. Through the 1994 economic soft landing, earnings had continued to rise steadily, and by 1995, they had surpassed US$115 million. However, the long-term debt increased as well, reaching US$623 million in that year. Century Telephone doubled its size with 660,000 more telephone access lines in 12 states after acquiring Delta Security Alarm Co., Inc. of Monroe, Louisiana, and Pacific Telecom, its largest purchase up to that point. Pacific Telecom, Inc. was renamed CenturyTel of the Northwest, Inc. and will continue to operate.
CenturyTel bought 50% of Houston-based SkyComm International, Inc. in March 2003 to create a satellite teleport for its global Network Access Point (NAP) technology. CenturyTel also purchased Digital Teleport, Inc.’s fibre network in June, which spans 5,700 miles (9,200 kilometres) from Illinois to Texas and neighbouring states. The network business LightCore was rebranded by CenturyTel. In December, CenturyTel purchased the Midwest Fiber Optic Network (MFON) from Level 3 Communications, Inc., a stand-alone system in the same core central states as LightCore, to round off the year. It collaborated with EchoStar Communications Corporation for DISH Network multi-channel service in August 2004. CenturyTel launched a wireless phone and data service in 2005, and purchased a number of fibre networks from KMC Telecom Holdings, Inc. across the central United States. CenturyTel sold its Arizona holdings to Hopi Telecommunications, Inc. in 2006, reducing the company’s overall operations to 23. Madison River Communications, located in Mebane, North Carolina, and parent company of four LECs (AL, GA, IL, and NC) as well as CLEC operations in IL, LA, and NC, was bought by CenturyTel in May 2007. Mebtel Communications, a phone company that serves Alamance County, North Carolina, Orange County, North Carolina, and Caswell County, North Carolina near the Virginia International Raceway, was one of the LECs.
