David Blaine Career
Alive in the Grave (1999)
Blaine was buried alive for seven days in an underground plastic box beneath a 3-ton water-filled tank across from Trump Place on 68th St. and Riverside Boulevard on April 5, 1999, as part of a prank dubbed “Buried Alive.” “Blaine’s only communication with the outside world was a hand buzzer, which might have alerted an around-the-clock emergency team stand,” CNN reports.
Blaine attempted and failed to stand on a giant block of ice in Times Square, New York City, for 72 hours on November 27, 2000, in a stunt called Frozen in Time. It was the subject of a television special. Even before the ice chunks were placed around him, he was dressed casually and appeared to be shivering. He was given air and drink through a tube, and his urine was evacuated with a catheter.
Blaine was raised onto a 100 ft (30 m) high and 22 in (0.56 m) wide pillar in Bryant Park, New York City, by a crane on May 22, 2002. He wasn’t tethered to the pillar, but he did have two retractable handles on either side to grab in case of bad weather. For 35 hours, he sat atop the pillar. He completed the feat by landing on a landing platform fashioned of a 12 ft (3.7 m) high hoop.
Blaine began an endurance stunt on September 5, 2003, in which he was locked inside a transparent Plexiglas container. The case, which measured 3 feet (0.9 metres) by 7 feet (2.1 metres) by 7 feet (2.1 metres), was suspended 30 feet (9.1 metres) in the air next to Potters Fields Park on the south bank of the River Thames in London (2.1 metres).
