DoorDash, Inc. is a company that provides an online meal ordering and delivery service. Its headquarters are in San Francisco. It is the largest meal delivery firm in the United States, with a 56 percent market share. In the convenience delivery sector, it has a 60 percent market share. The platform serves 450,000 merchants, 20,000,000 customers, and 1 million deliverers as of December 31, 2020. When a macaroon store owner sought for help using technology for deliveries in the autumn of 2012, Stanford University students Tony Xu, Stanley Tang, Andy Fang, and Evan Moore (now a partner at Khosla Ventures) were gathering feedback on a smartphone app for small company owners. was started in Palo Alto, California, in January 2013. The first consumers were largely Stanford University students. It earned $120,000 in startup money from Y Combinator in return for a 7% share in the summer of 2013. In June 2013, it was renamed DoorDash. CFO Mike Dinsdale quit DoorDash in October 2017, less than a year after joining the firm. DoorDash surpassed Uber Eats to take second place in overall US food delivery sales, behind GrubHub, in December 2018. It has surpassed GrubHub in total revenues by March 2019, accounting for 27.6% of the on-demand delivery market. By early 2019, DoorDash had surpassed Uber Eats as the leading meal delivery service in the United States.

DoorDash debuted its first ghost kitchen, DoorDash Kitchen, in Redwood City, California, in October 2019, with four eateries open. By June 2020, DoorDash had secured more than $2.5 billion from Y Combinator, Charles River Ventures, SV Angel, Khosla Ventures, Sequoia Capital, SoftBank Group, GIC, and Kleiner Perkins, among other investors. During the COVID-19 epidemic in April 2020, DoorDash reported that it had “stockpiled tens of thousands of gloves and bottles of hand sanitizer” and was giving them out for free to delivery drivers. The business also stated that contactless delivery was now the default drop-off option. DoorDash became the fastest-growing meal delivery business that month. The firm began its “Reopen for Delivery” initiative in October 2020, in which brick-and-mortar restaurants that have shuttered due to the COVID-19 epidemic collaborate with local ghost kitchen operators to provide meal delivery and pick-up-only services. DoorDash will establish its first real restaurant location in November 2020, collaborating with Bay Area eatery Burma Bites to handle delivery and pick-up orders. The firm went public on December 9, 2020, after obtaining $3.37 billion in an initial public offering.

The New York Times questioned the company’s tipping policy in July 2019, followed by The Verge, Vox, and Gothamist. Drivers are guaranteed a minimum every order, which DoorDash pays by default. Instead of going straight to the driver, a customer’s tip goes to the corporation first to fulfil the mandated minimum. The portion of the tip that exceeded the minimum was subsequently paid directly to the drivers. A DoorDash customer filed a class action complaint against the business, alleging that their tipping policy is “materially inaccurate and deceptive.” In August 2020, the matter was sent to arbitration. The corporation changed their policy as a result of the demand. The firm paid $2.5 million to resolve a lawsuit with Attorney General Karl Racine of the District of Columbia, with the money going to deliverers, the government, and charity. In April 2020, Davitashvili v. GrubHub Inc. will be heard in the matter of Davitashvili v. GrubHub Inc. DoorDash, Grubhub, Postmates, and Uber Eats have all been accused of abusing their monopolistic position by only listing restaurants on their apps if the restaurant owners sign contracts that include terms requiring that rates for dine-in and delivery customers be the same. The plaintiffs claim that this arrangement raises the price for dine-in customers by requiring them to fund the cost of delivery; and that the apps impose “exorbitant” fees that vary from $10 to $50. The complaint seeks triple damages, including overcharges, for dine-in and delivery customers in the United States who used the defendants’ delivery applications since April 14, 2016. Despite the filing of various preliminary documents in the case, no trial date has been scheduled. On May 4, 2019, DoorDash said that a data breach had exposed the personal information of 4.9 million consumers, delivery drivers, and merchants. The compromise has no effect on anybody who joined the site after April 5, 2018.
