Edward Asner Career

Asner went to Kansas City’s Wyandotte High School and the University of Chicago. He studied journalism in Chicago until a lecturer told him that it was a difficult field to break into. He had been working in a steel mill before switching to drama and making his stage debut as the martyred Thomas Becket in T. S. Eliot’s Murder in the Cathedral in a college production.

Asner helped organise the Playwrights Theatre Company in Chicago after his military service, but he moved to New York City before the Compass Players reformed in the mid-1950s.  Later, he was a regular guest star on The Second City, the show that succeeded Compass. In New York City, Asner played Jonathan Jeremiah Peachum in the Off-Broadway revival of Threepenny Opera, made his Broadway debut in Face of a Hero with Jack Lemmon in 1960, and began to create a name for himself as a television actor, having debuted on Studio One in 1957. In the 1963 episode of The Outer Limits titled “It Crawled Out of the Woodwork,” Asner played Detective Sgt. Thomas Siroleo, and in the 1965 episode of Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea named “The Exile,” he played the immoral ex-premier Brynov. In the Elvis Presley film Kid Galahad, he made his film debut in 1962.

Before landing his job with Mary Tyler Moore, Asner appeared as Custody Officer Lincoln Peers in four episodes of The Untouchables, the syndicated crime drama Decoy, starring Beverly Garland, and Route 66 in 1962 (the episode “Welcome to the Wedding”). He appeared in the series finale of CBS’s The Reporter, which starred Harry Guardino, and in Jack Lord’s ABC miniseries Stoney Burke. Mr. Novak, Ben Casey, Gunsmoke, Mission: Impossible, The Outer Limits, The Fugitive, and The Invaders were among his other television appearances. In the episode “Echo of Another Day,” Asner portrayed George Johnson on The Virginian in 1963.

Asner is most remembered for his role as Lou Grant on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, which he originally played in 1970. Asner’s character was given his own show, Lou Grant (1977–82), after Moore’s series ended in 1977. The Lou Grant series was an hour-long award-winning drama about newspaper journalism, in contrast to the Mary Tyler Moore series, a thirty-minute award-winning comedy about television journalism.

Captain Davies, the ethically confused captain of the Lord Ligonier, the slave ship that carried Kunta Kinte to America, was played by Asner in the ABC miniseries Roots, for which he received critical acclaim. Asner won an Emmy for the part, as did Axel Jordache in the miniseries Rich Man, Poor Man for his similarly bleak performance (1976). In Papa Giovanni: Ioannes XXIII (Pope John XXIII 2002), an Italian television film for RAI, on the other hand, he played a past pontiff in the starring role.
