Fat Joe, an American rapper from the Bronx, New York, is better known by his stage name Joseph Antonio Cartagena.Joseph Antonio Cartagena, better known as Fat Joe, is a Bronx, New York American rapper and actor. It is also referred to as ‘Joey Crack’ and ‘Fat Joe da Gangsta.’ He belongs to the ‘Terror Squad’ and ‘D.I.T.C.’ music groups. In addition to being a rap artist, he is a successful entrepreneur and the managing director of “Terror Squad Entertainment,” an entertainment company. At first, he worked with a number of artists and later signed them on his own label. He released several albums and singles from the studio. ‘Jealous Ones Still Envy’ or ‘J.O.S.E.’ was his best-selling album. His duet ‘Lean Back’ became a popular number with Remy Ma. His hit songs include ‘What is Luv?,’ ‘Make it Rain,’ and ‘All the Way Up.’ Fat Joe has done films including ‘Happy Feet,’ ‘Scary Movie 3,’ and ‘She Gotta Have It’ in Netflix. Joseph Antonio Cartagena was born on August 19, 1970 to the parents of Puerto Rican and Cuban descent in South Bronx, New York. He grew up in public housing and used to burglary to supplement the income of his family. His older brother introduced him to music and both Latin and Zulu imbibed him. His early years were influenced by the music of Furious Five, Funky 4 + 1, and Theodore. He was inspired by his environment to write lyrics.
In the early 1990’s, as part of a group D.I.T.C. (Diggin In The Crates crew), he signed an agreement with ‘Relativity Records’ and used the stage name ‘Fat Joe da Gangsta.’ His debut album ‘Represent’ was released in 1993. The album included works by, among others, Diamond D., Lord Finesse and The Beatnuts. The second album of “Jealous One’s envy” (1995) features Diamond D. and the acclaimed artist, KRS-One. One single from this album, ‘Envy,’ reached eight on the ‘Hot Rap Tracks’ chart. The album also included the Latin rapper Big Pun, ‘Watch Out,’ whose music has influenced Fat Joe since he was a boy. Joe also contributed to other artists’ recordings, including “LL Cool J.”
He signed up for the ‘Atlantic Records’ in 1998 and released ‘Don Cartagena,’ his third album. On the ‘Billboard 200,’ it was number 7 and it was certified as gold by the RIAA. Amongst other things, the album featured Big Pun, Diddy, Raekwon, Jadakiss, and also saw Joe’s own band ‘Terror Squad’ debut. The “Terror Squad” includes Carbon Link, Triple Seis, Prospect, Late Big Pun, Armageddon and Remy Ma (who joined later). ‘Don Cartagena’ and ‘Bet Ya Man Can’t Triz’ were the most popular singles on this album. Joe was featured in the 1999 single ‘Feelin So Good’ by Jennifer Lopez.
His fourth album, ‘Jealous Ones Still Envy,’ was published in 2001, with a lot of famous names, including Irv Gotti, Ja Rule, Ludacris, Ashanti, R. Kelly, Busta Rhymes, Buju Banton, and many others. His most successful album was Platinum certified. The single from this album, ‘We Thuggin,’ by R. Kelly became popular and the ‘What is Luv?’ by Irv Gotti, featuring both Ja Rule and Ashanti, was a great hit.
Fat Joe’s fifth album ‘Loyalty’ was released in 2002 and was not as commercial as his predecessor. In 2004, he recorded the second album ‘True Story’ for the ‘Terror Squad.’ The number ‘Lean Back’ with Joe and Remy Ma was a huge hit.
