Freddie Highmore Career

At the age of seven, Highmore began his acting career in minor appearances on television. He made his cinematic debut as the kid of a lady who has recently gotten alienated from her commitment-phobic French boyfriend in Coky Giedroyc’s comedy Women Talking Dirty (1999). Highmore starred as a youthful King Arthur in The Mists of Avalon, a TNT miniseries based on Arthurian tales that presented the ladies of Camelot as the true power behind the throne. He played a little kid who dreams of transferring his family to Stratford-upon-Avon in the BBC miniseries Happy Birthday Shakespeare in 2001. In 2005, he played Charlie Bucket in Tim Burton’s musical fantasy film Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which was based on Roald Dahl’s novel of the same name. Highmore was allegedly suggested for the role by co-star Johnny Depp, with whom he had previously worked in Finding Neverland; Depp had been pleased with the young actor’s performance and therefore put his name up for the part. Highmore had not seen the original 1971 version of the film and had opted to wait until he was finished filming to avoid being affected in his depiction of Charlie. He earned the Critics’ Choice Movie Award for Best Young Performer and the Satellite Award for Outstanding New Talent for his role. Highmore voiced the titular character in Justin and the Knights of Valour, an animated adventure film released in 2013. From 2013 to 2017, he played Norman Bates in the A&E drama-thriller series Bates Motel, which is a prequel to Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho and picks up the plot in the current day. He was nominated for the Saturn Award for Best Actor on Television (2013), the Satellite Award for Best Actor – Television Series Drama (2013), and the Critics’ Choice Television Award for Best Actor in a Drama Series (2014–2015, and 2017) for his work in 2016. NBC had bought a comedy pilot screenplay written and executive produced by Highmore and Bates Motel creator Kerry Ehrin in August 2014. He had an appearance in the Libertines’ “You’re My Waterloo” music video in 2015. In 2016, Highmore featured in Nick Hamm’s political comedy-drama film The Journey and Stephen Poliakoff’s BBC Two seven-part miniseries Close to the Enemy. He began playing Dr. Shaun Murphy on the ABC drama series The Good Doctor the following year, on which he also serves as a producer and director. For his portrayal, he was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Drama Series in 2017.
