Jackie Chan Career

He began his cinematic career as a kid actor in minor roles when he was five years old. At the age of eight, he starred in the film Big and Little Wong Tin Bar (1962), with several of his fellow “Little Fortunes,” with Li Li-Hua playing his mother. The next year, he featured as extras in The Love Eterne (1963) and in King Hu’s 1966 film Come Drink with Me. Chan was hired to Chu Mu’s Great Earth Picture Company in 1971 after appearing as an extra in another kung fu film, A Touch of Zen. Jackie Chan got a message from Willie Chan, a Hong Kong film producer who had been pleased with Jackie’s stunt choreography work, in 1976. He was given an acting role in a film directed by Lo Wei by Willie Chan. With the film New Fist of Fury, Lo sought to model Chan after Bruce Lee, after seeing his performance in the John Woo picture Hand of Death (1976).

To emphasise his resemblance to Bruce Lee, whose stage name meant “Little Dragon” in Chinese, his stage name was altered to Sing Lung (also written as Cheng Long, literally “becoming the dragon”). The film was a flop because Chan was unfamiliar with Lee’s martial arts technique. Willie Chan became Jackie’s personal manager and close buddy, a position he held for more than three decades. Beginning with his early ventures into the American film business in the 1980s, he was essential in starting Chan’s worldwide career. The Big Brawl, his debut Hollywood picture, was released in 1980. Chan later starred in the 1981 picture The Cannonball Run, which made more than $100 million worldwide.

Despite being mostly overlooked by North American viewers in favour of renowned American performers like Burt Reynolds, Chan was pleased by the outtakes displayed before the end credits, prompting him to use the same method in subsequent films. In the film Dragons Forever, Chan starred alongside Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao for the final time. Both Hung and Corey Yuen, who both graduated from the China Drama Academy, co-directed the film, and Yuen Wah portrayed the villain. Chan appeared in a succession of popular sequels in the late 1980s and early 1990s, beginning with Project A Part II and Police Story 2, which received the award for Best Action Choreography at the 1989 Hong Kong Film Awards. Armour of God II: Operation Condor and Police Story 3: Super Cop followed, with Chan winning the Best Actor Award at the 1993 Golden Horse Film Festival for the latter.

Who Am I?, Chan’s final picture for Golden Harvest, was released in 1998. After leaving Golden Harvest in 1999, he produced and acted opposite Shu Qi in Gorgeous, a romantic comedy with just a few martial arts sequences that concentrated on personal connections. Despite Chan’s departure from Golden Harvest in 1999, two of his films, Gorgeous (1999) and The Accidental Spy (2001), were produced and distributed by the studio (2001). Chan next contributed his voice and motion capture to the PlayStation game Jackie Chan Stuntmaster, which was released in 2000. Chan’s first on-screen collaboration with fellow Chinese actor Jet Li, The Forbidden Kingdom, was finished on August 24, 2007, and the film was released in April 2008. The film made extensive use of effects and wires. In the June 2008 film Kung Fu Panda, Chan voiced Master Monkey with Jack Black, Dustin Hoffman, and Angelina Jolie. In addition, he was on the advisory board for Anthony Szeto’s film Wushu, which was released on May 1, 2008. As father and son, Sammo Hung and Wang Wenjie feature in the film. 1911, his 100th film, was released on September 26, 2011. The film’s co-director, executive producer, and principal actor was Jackie Chan. Despite the fact that Chan has directed over 10 films in his career, this was his first since 1998’s Who Am I? On October 14, 1911, the film premiered in North America. Chan declared his retirement from action films during the 2012 Cannes Film Festival, claiming that he was growing too old for the genre.

He subsequently emphasised that he would not be retiring from action films entirely, but that he would be doing less stunts and taking better care of his body. Chan appeared in Police Story 2013, a Ding Sheng-directed revival of the Police Story franchise, which was released in China towards the end of 2013. Chan’s next film, Dragon Blade, was released in early 2015 and stars John Cusack and Adrien Brody from Hollywood. Chan appeared in the 2016 action comedy Railroad Tigers and the 2017 Anglo-Chinese action thriller The Foreigner. He also appears in Bleeding Steel, a science fiction film. He will star opposite John Cena in Project X-Traction in 2021. His films grossed HK$1.14 billion (US$145 million) in Hong Kong between 1991 and 2010, over US$72 million in South Korea between 1991 and 2010, and 48.4 billion (US$607 million) in Japan between 1991 and 2012. [As of 2018, his films had grossed US$1.84 billion (more than US$2.44 billion adjusted for inflation) in the US and Canada, and CN$8.6 billion (US$1.24 billion) in China. In France, 20 million tickets were sold at the box office.
