Jean Marie Biography

Jean-Alfred Villain-Marais, better known by his stage name Jean Marais, was a French actor, writer, director, and sculptor who lived from December 11, 1913, until November 8, 1998. He was the muse and lover of famed director Jean Cocteau and appeared in over 100 films. For his services to French cinema, he was given the French Legion of Honor in 1996.

From 1937 through 1947, Marais was Jean Cocteau’s lover, muse, and loyal companion. After Cocteau’s death, Marais authored L’Inconcevable Jean Cocteau, a memoir of Cocteau in which he credited authorship to “Cocteau-Marais.” In 1975, he published his autobiography, Histoires de ma vie. George Reich, an American dancer, was his companion from 1948 to 1959. He is said to have been one of Umberto II of Italy’s loves.

Despite being primarily homosexual, Marais met and had a two-year relationship with actress Mila Parély in 1942, with whom he later appeared in Jean Cocteau’s Beauty and the Beast. They remained longtime friends, and Parély has managed Marais’ Paris ceramics shop since 1976.

Marais made his film debut in an uncredited appearance in Song of the Streets (1933), and he also appeared in Etienne (1933). Marcel L’Herbier cast him in The Sparrowhawk (1933), which starred Charles Boyer; The Scandal (1934), which starred Gaby Morlay; Happiness (1934), which starred Boyer again; The Venturer (1934), which starred Victor Francen; The New Men (1934), which starred Harry Baur; and Nights of Fire (1937), which starred Morlay and Francen.

Marais appeared in Marcel Carné’s Bizarre, Bizarre (1937), as well as Henri Decoin’s Abused Confidence (1937), Maurice Tourneur’s The Patriot (1938), a biopic of Paul I of Russia starring Baur, and Sacha Guitry’s Remontons les Champs-Élysées (1938).

These were minor parts. Marais also took the stage. Jean Cocteau saw him in a 1937 stage version of Oedipus Rex, directed by Charles Dullin. Cocteau was so taken with Marais that he cast him in his play Les Chevaliers de la Table Ronde.

Marais starred in Jean Cocteau’s play Les Parents terribles (1938), which was based on Marais’ childhood and was a huge success.

He made his stage debut in Jean Cocteau’s La Machine à écrire (1941), and he directed and created Racine’s Britannicus (1941). He temporarily appeared with the Comédie-Française, then took a break from performing to fight with the Free French Forces in Alsace, gaining the Croix de Guerre.

L’Éternel retour (1943), a re-telling of Tristan and Isolde set in 1940s France and penned by Jean Cocteau, was Marais’ first film as a starring man. Madeleine Sologne co-starred in the film, which was directed by Jean Delannoy. It was well-received, and he became a celebrity as a result of it.

In Christian-film Jaque’s Voyage Without Hope (1943), Marais played the male protagonist with Simone Renant.

Marais was also directed by Christian-Jaque in Carmen (1944), starring Viviane Romance. When it was first released, this was one of the most popular films in France.
