Jerry Lawler Biography

Jerry O’Neil Lawler (November 29, 1949) is an American colour commentator and professional wrestler best known as Jerry “The King.” He is currently signed to WWE and works as a commentator for the company.

He is also known for his dispute with comedian Andy Kaufman, and he starred in the 1999 comedy Man on the Moon, in which he played himself. Since entering the business, Lawler has held more acknowledged championships than any other professional wrestler in history, despite the fact that he has never won a championship in WWE, having wrestled rarely while largely providing colour commentary.

Lawler’s artistic abilities drew the notice of local wrestling promoter Aubrey Griffith while he was working as a CD jockey in Memphis, Tennessee.

Lawler agreed to give Griffith free publicity in exchange for free wrestling training, and the two established a deal. Lawler made his professional wrestling debut in 1970, and in September 1971, he won his first championship by winning a battle royal. With partner Jim White, he won the NWA Southern Tag Team Championship under the management of Sam Bass. Lawler developed a feud with Jackie Fargo, his former trainer and mentor, in 1974. A contest for the NWA Southern Heavyweight Championship resulted as a result of this. Lawler earned the belt and the title of “King of Wrestling” on July 24, 1974. Lawler worked with a variety of partners in 1975, including Mr Wrestling II, Don Greene, and Bob Orton, Jr. During this time, he won the NWA Macon Tag Team Championship twice. Lawler began his career as a heel, but after breaking from Bass at the end of 1974, he turned a face.

Jerry Lawler Career

He was married to a woman named Kay from 1971 till 1978. He later married Paula Jean Carruth, but the couple divorced in 1991. In September of 2000, he married Stacy Carter, a fellow wrestler.

Heather Lyn Lawler, Kevin Lawler, and Brian Christopher Lawler are his children; Brian, who was also a professional wrestler, committed suicide in July of 2018.The AWA Southern Heavyweight Championship and the SMW Heavyweight Championship are two of the championships he has won.Aside from his battle with Kaufman on the stage, he has had feuds with people like Dutch Mantel, Bret Hart, and Vince McMahon. In 1970, he began his professional career.

The Honky Tonk Man, a fellow professional wrestler, is Lawler’s cousin. Lawler has three wives and two sons from his first marriage to Kay. On July 29, 2018, his son Brian, who wrestled in the WWF/E under the identities “Brian Christopher” and “Grandmaster Sexay,” committed suicide.
Kevin, his second son, has worked in professional wrestling as a referee and wrestler under the monikers “Kevin Christian” and “Freddie Gilbert,” the latter of which he employed as Eddie Gilbert’s “brother.” In his book It’s Good To Be The King…, he says, “It’s Good To Be The King… Kevin’s modest physical size, according to Lawler, has kept him from achieving the same level of success as Brian. Kevin was arrested in August 2008 on trespassing and aggravated burglary charges.

Carter (a valet who has also had in-ring appearances) was released by the World Wrestling Federation in mid-February 2001. Lawler then protested by leaving the company. Carter and Lawler eventually split up, and Lawler returned to the WWF in November 2001. On October 15, 2003, their divorce was completed.

Lawler spent part of his boyhood in Ohio after his father was sent to a Ford Motor Company assembly factory in Lorain, Ohio. His family lived in Amherst, Ohio, a suburb of Cleveland, from the age of seven to fifteen. Despite the fact that his visit was brief, it had a lasting impact on Lawler’s life. He frequently mentions Cleveland as his second favourite city, behind Memphis, and is a die-hard supporter of the Cleveland Indians, Browns, and Cavaliers. Lawler will usually wear a Browns or Indians jersey when WWE performs in Cleveland (at SummerSlam 1996, he teased Browns fans by wearing a Baltimore Ravens jersey, because the original Browns moved to Baltimore and became the Ravens), and he will throw out the first pitch at an Indians game during baseball season.
