Kimila Ann Basinger is an actress, singer, and former fashion model from the United States. Basinger went to Los Angeles in 1976 after a successful modelling career in New York, where she began her acting career on television.
Before making her feature debut in the drama Hard Country, she appeared in several made-for-television films, including a remake of From Here to Eternity (1979). Basinger rose to notoriety as Bond girl Domino Petachi in Never Say Never Again, and was hailed as a sex icon of the 1980s and 1990s (1983). She was nominated for a Golden Globe for her performance in The Natural (1984), starred in the sensual drama 912 Weeks (1986), and as Vicki Vale in Tim Burton’s Batman (1989), which is still her highest-grossing film. Basinger earned the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her femme fatale depiction in L.A. Confidential (1997), and Fifty Shades Darker (2013) are just a few of her previous films (2017). Her father, Donald Wade Basinger (1923–2016), was a big band pianist and loan manager who landed in Normandy on D-Day as a U.S. Army soldier.

Basinger was on the front of publications not long after her Ford deal. Throughout the early 1970s, she appeared in hundreds of advertisements, most memorably as the Breck Shampoo girl. She went back and forth between modelling and acting training at the Neighborhood Playhouse, as well as singing in Greenwich Village bars. Basinger attended the William Esper Studio for the Performing Arts in Manhattan, New York City, and graduated with honours.
Basinger left modelling in 1976 after five years as a cover girl and relocated to Los Angeles to pursue acting. She appeared in a few television episodes as a guest star, including McMillan & Wife and Charlie’s Angels, but declined a regular role in the latter series, which went to Cheryl Ladd. She co-starred in the miniseries version of From Here to Eternity with Natalie Wood, William Devane, and Steve Railsback in 1979, resuming her role as prostitute Lorene Rogers in a 13-episode sequel that aired in 1980. Basinger made her feature début in the critically acclaimed but little-seen rural drama Hard Country, which she followed with the Charlton Heston-directed outdoorsy adventure Mother Lode in 1981.
