During his stint as an idol trainee, RM chose the moniker “Rap Monster.” Though it is widely assumed that his moniker means “he raps like a monster,” it really comes from the words of a song he made in response to San E’s “Rap Genius.” San E says that he should be labelled a “rap monster” since he “raps non-stop” in the lyrics. He chose the stage name because it seemed “cool” to him. RM has defined his connection with the name as “love-hate,” believing that it was not chosen for its “great worth” to him.

Kim Nam-joon Career

RM auditioned for Big Deal Records in 2009, passing the first round with Samuel Seo but failing the second round due to forgetting all of his lines. Following the audition, however, rapper Sleepy exchanged contact information with RM, whom he subsequently referred to Pdogg of Big Hit Entertainment. Sleepy approached RM in 2010 and encouraged him to audition for Big Hit CEO Bang Si-hyuk. Bang offered RM a job at the record label, which he promptly accepted without telling his parents. [8] Bang and Pdogg decided to form a hip hop group as a result of their meeting, which eventually became the idol group BTS. At the age of 16, RM joined Big Hit Entertainment. He attended Global Cyber University while working as an idol.  He is studying a Master of Business Administration in Advertising and Media at Hanyang Cyber University as of 2020. RM spent three years training alongside fellow rapper Min Yoon-gi and dancer Jung Ho-seok, who subsequently went by the names Suga and J-Hope. RM appeared on five pre-debut tunes ascribed to BTS in 2010 and 2011 during his three-year trainee term. He also worked as a songwriter for the girl group Glam, contributing to the writing of their first hit, “Party (XXO),” an overtly pro-LGBTQ song that Billboard called “one of the most forward-thinking tunes out of a K-pop girl group in the previous decade.” Big Hit Entertainment published a teaser for BTS’ debut studio album Dark & Wild on August 5, 2014, with the album slated to be released on August 20. RM performed a solo rap tune that was subsequently published as part of BTS’ “Intro: What Am I to You?” RM developed a professional contact with Warren G, who volunteered to provide BTS a beat, through the reality television show American Hustle Life, which was utilised to make Dark & Wild. Warren G said in an interview with Korean magazine Hip Hop Playa that he met BTS through the programme and stayed in touch with them when they returned to South Korea. “P.D.D (Please Don’t Die)” was released by RM and Warren G on March 4, 2015.

RM released his debut solo mixtape, RM, on March 17, 2015, which was placed 48th on Spin’s “50 Best Hip Hop Albums of 2015.” The mixtape included a wide range of subjects, including RM’s history on “Voice” and the concept of “you’re you and I’m me” in “Do You.” RM declared himself as an agnostic when addressing his work on the tune “God Rap,” saying that the only thing that decides his fate is himself. The mixtape took RM around four or five months to complete, with RM working on it in between BTS’ activities. The following year, RM revealed that he had mostly written about his negative feelings, like as wrath and rage, but that the songs had helped him deal with them. In March 2017, RM teamed with American rapper Wale on a unique socially-charged tune called “Change,” which was released as a free digital download along with a music video shot only two weeks before the track’s release. Wale reached out to RM in 2016 after seeing RM’s rendition of his song “Illest Bitch” on Twitter, and the two began dating. RM chose the theme of “Change,” claiming that while the two rappers were quite different, they shared a political and social position in which they both wanted the world to change for the better. In October of 2018, RM released his second mixtape, Mono, which he described to as a “playlist.” With the playlist, he became the first Korean artist to reach number one on the Emerging Artists Chart in the United States. The playlist was well-received by critics, with RM revealing “his profound anxieties on songs like “Tokyo” and “Seoul.” Honne, a British electropop duo, produced the song “Seoul.” After seeing RM endorse their music on Twitter, Honne tracked out RM and visited him in Seoul after one of their gigs. The two felt compelled to work with RM as a result of their encounter. Honne stated on March 25, 2019, that RM has contributed a feature to their version of “Crying Over You” with vocalist BEKA, which was published on March 27. Honne first published “Crying Over You” in 2018, with just BEKA contributing a verse. The song was supposed to be released in January 2019, however it was postponed owing to “unforeseen circumstances.” Bibi Zhou, a Chinese vocalist, was added to the Chinese version, replacing BEKA and performing alongside RM. Big Hit Entertainment released the song “Persona” as a promo for BTS’ EP Map of the Soul: Persona on the same day, with RM performing it solo. On Billboard’s YouTube Song Chart, Persona debuted at number 17. Three months later, on July 24, 2019, RM appeared on the “Seoul Town Road” remix of Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road,” “infusing[ing]…his English-language line with a surprisingly decent Southern accent.” It was revealed on December 29 that RM would be featured on Younha’s tune “Winter Flower,” which would be released on January 6, 2020. RM also appears on “Don’t,” the title track from eAeon’s second solo album, which will be released on April 30th, 2021.
