King Ferran Biography
Ali-Royal was an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire who died in January 2001. After winning one race as a two-year-old in 1995, he showed consistent good form as a three-year-old, winning the King Charles II Stakes and the Ben Marshall Stakli-Royal. He ran nine times as a three-year-old in 1996, beginning with a third-place finish behind Ramooz and Bahamian Knight in the Classic Trial at Thirsk Racecourse on April 20. In the Listed King Charles II Stakes over seven furlongs at Newmarket Racecourse on May 17, he started third favourite behind the Free Handicap runner-up Projection and the Chesham Stakes winner World Premier. He went to the front two furlongs out and drew away from his rivals to win “easily” by eight lengths.
He was ridden by Willie Ryan. Ali-Royal was stepped up in class for the Group Three Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot in June, but finished fifth to Lucayan Prince after Ryan struggled to get a clear run in the final quarter mile. Despite his defeat, the colt was promoted to the highest class and raced against older horses in the Group One Sussex Stakes at Goodwood Racecourse in July, finishing seventh of ten runners behind the four-year-old First Island.e in September.
Ali-Royal was again the beaten favourite, finishing second to the Godolphin colt Kammtarra. The colt returned to the winner’s circle at the end of the month when he was installed as the favourite in a minor event over one mile at Bath Racecourse. He took the lead approaching the final quarter mile and went clear of the field to win by twelve lengths over the five-year-old Nijo, who was ridden by veteran Pat Edderyjust below top class. Wacker III aKieren Fallon took over as Ali-regular Royal’s jockey in 1997 and rode the colt in all six of his races. On his seasonal debut, he was the 11/4 favourite for the Group Three Earl of Sefton Stakes over eight and a half furlongs at Newmarket in April. After being held up by Fallon in the early stages, he took the lead a furlong and a half from the finish and won by two lengths and a head over Wixim and Amrak Ajeeb. Ten days later, he was moved up in distance for the ten-furlong Gordon Richards Stakes at Sandown Park Racecourse, where he finished third behind Sasuru and Multicolored.

After struggling to get a clear run and then stumbling when Fallon switched him to the outside, he finished third, beaten a neck and one and a quarter lengths by Allied Forces and Centre Stalls. The colt then ran in a minor race at York in July, where he started second favourite behind Jersey Stakes runner-up Kahal. Fallon tracked the leaders before sending Ali-Royal into the lead a furlong out to win by one and a half lengths over Weet-A-Minute.
Fallon reportedly stated that the colt “won as he pleased.” Ali-Royal was one of nine horses to compete in the Sussex Stakes at Goodwood on July 30. Starborough, a three-year-old filly, was the early favourite, ahead of Allied Forces and Among Men, with Ali-Royal coming in at 13/2. Allied Forces came in third place, ahead of Among Men and Classic Park. stud record Ali-Royal was retired from racing to become a breeding stallion at Coolmore’s Castlelso sired the steeplechaser Howle Hill, who won the Amlin 1965 Chase. In January 2001, while standing at the Lynden Park Stud in Victoria, he devwon the July Cup at Newmarket as well as the Breeders’ Cup Mile. His best winners at stud included Oscar Schindler, the double Irish St.
Leger winner, and Bullish Luck, the Hong Kong champion. Ali-dam, Royal’s Alidiva, who was probably Chief Singer’s best horse, won at Listed level and was a half-sister to Prix d’Ispahan winner Croco Rouge. Alidiva went on to have a very successful broodmare career, siring Group One winners Taipan (Preis von Europa, Premio Roma) and Ali-full-sister Royal’s Sleepytime. During his racing career, Ali-Royal raced for Wacker’s Greenbay Stables and was trained by Henry Cecil at the Warren Place Stable in Newmarket, Suffolk. Ali-Royal was three years old when he won the Earl of Sefton Stakes on his seasonal debut and the Sussex Stakes on his final racecourse appearance. From sixteen starts, he finished with seven wins and six placings. He was a breeding stallion in Ireland and Australia before dying at the age of eight in 2001.
