Marriott International Wiki/Bio
Marriott Corporation was a hospitality firm that existed from 1927 until 1993. It was created by J. Willard Marriott and Frank Kimball as Hot Shoppes, Inc. in 1957, and its first hotel was the Twin Bridges Motor Hotel in Arlington County, Virginia (demolished 1990). In 1969, Marriott Corporation launched its first overseas resort in Acapulco, Mexico. In 1967, Hot Shoppes merged with Marriott Corporation, which in 1993 separated into Marriott International, Inc. and Host Marriott Corporation. J. Willard Marriott, who migrated from Utah to Washington, D.C. in 1927 with his business partner Hugh Colton and his wife Alice, owned a roadside food stand selling A&W Root Beer in the Columbia Heights district of Washington at 14th Street and Park Road NW. Later, he renamed the food stand The Hot Shoppe and expanded the menu to include Mexican cuisine. Marriott’s operations were expanded to Baltimore, Maryland, in 1934, and the company’s culinary services branch was launched shortly after. During WWII, the company grew to include food service management at defence facilities and government facilities, such as the US Treasury.
They introduced popular items such as the “Mighty Mo,” a double hamburger served in a sesame-seed bun divided into three slices with a dill pickle stripe on top and tomato, lettuce, and a special sauce on the bottom layer, as well as very thick milk shakes served with a long-handled spoon and a particularly wide straw. Then, in the 1950s, Hot Shoppes, Inc. began supplying food services to public schools and, in 1955, to Children’s Hospital, a contract that lasted 35 years. In 1953, the firm became public. In 1957, the company ventured into the hotel market by building the Twin Bridges Motor Hotel in Arvada, Colorado, which was the first Marriott hotel (really a motel). Marriott-Hot Shoppes, Inc. was renamed Hot Shoppes, Inc. in 1964. In 1967, the corporation was renamed Marriott Corporation. Bob Wian sold the Big Boy family restaurant company to Marriott in 1967. Marriott bought RoBee’s, a roast beef sandwich fast-food company located in Fort Wayne, the next year, but then learned they wouldn’t be permitted to use the RoBee’s brand nationally. The Roy Rogers Family Restaurants was formed a few months later by converting RoBee’s and a few Hot Shoppe locations, thanks to the suggestion of new Marriott board member Bob Wian. Cowboy actor Roy Rogers was contacted to lend his name to the roast beef sandwich venture, and the Roy Rogers Family Restaurants was formed a few months later by converting RoBee’s and a few Hot Shoppe locations.
Marriott’s business holdings have grown over time. Marriott continued to work in the food service industry and eventually became involved in airline in-flight catering. This element of their company is still quite important to them, since they provide culinary services to many major airlines. Marriott opened Marriott’s Great America theme parks in California and Illinois in 1976. Another was planned for Maryland, but local resistance stopped any of the three suggested locations from ever seeing the light of day. There were copies of the original Hot Shoppes throughout the parks. In 1982, the business paid $120 million for Host International and $48.6 million for Gino’s Inc., the owner of the Gino’s Hamburgers and Rustler Steak House restaurant brands. The next year, two different corporations bought 108 Rustler Steak House Restaurants and three additional restaurants for unknown sums. Tenly Enterprises, a newly established company, bought 94 locations, while Sizzler Restaurants International bought the other 17. Marriott had developed a vacation time-share subsidiary, now known as Marriott Vacation Club International, and a senior-living branch by 1984, after purchasing American Resorts Group for an unknown sum. In 1985, the firm paid $314 million to the Imperial Group P.L.C. of London for the Howard Johnson’s restaurant chain, with the intention of converting the acquired restaurants to the Bob’s Big Boy brand and making Bob’s the country’s largest coffee-shop business. Marriott sold the franchise rights to Big Boy restaurants to Elias Brothers for an unknown sum in 1987, but kept 208 company-owned Bob’s Big Boy restaurants in California and a few sites on the East Coast.
Marriott bought all 91 Wag’s restaurants from Walgreens Corporation in 1988, but the business was disbanded in 1991. In 1990, the Roy Rogers restaurant business was sold to Hardee’s for $365 million in cash. The Marriott Corporation ceased to exist as a single entity in 1993, when it was split into two separate entities: 1) Marriott International Corporation, which ran the hotel and lodging side of the business as well as Marriott Vacation Club International, and 2) Host Marriott Corporation, which ran the Marriott Food Services Management division. On December 2, 1999, the last Hot Shoppes restaurant at the Marlow Heights Shopping Center closed.
