Michael Ball Career
Despite suffering from anxiety, Thames Television invited Ball to perform during the Miss England contest, a live televised event, and he sang well enough. He got less concerned about his anxiety condition after watching a recording and realising that no one would have noticed how nervous he was.
Ball would not be under too much pressure as Raoul, according to Mackintosh, and the part was a good fit for him.Ball starred as Alex in both London and New York productions of Aspects of Love, as well as Giorgio in Stephen Sondheim’s Passion in London.Ball appeared in three major performances in 1998: Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Fiftieth Birthday Concert at the Royal Albert Hall (issued on DVD), Sondheim Tonight at the Barbican Centre (released on CD), and Hey, Mr. Producer: The Musical World of Cameron Mackintosh (released on DVD) (released on CD and DVD). In 2002, he played Caractacus Potts in the Sherman Brothers musical Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, which was widely regarded as his return performance.
ater same year, he appeared as a guest star on the BBC’s Clark’s Concert. He sang “Home” and “One Voice” off his latest album, Since You’ve Been Gone, as well as two duets with Clark. Other appearances include singing at the BBC’s St David’s Day concert and playing Marius in Les Misérables: The Dream Cast in Concert, the tenth anniversary concert of the musical in 1995. Ball, a lyric baritone, also sang the role of Valjean for the Queen and her guests at Windsor Castle in a special concert production of Les Misérables in 2004. In 2005, he stepped in for Michael Crawford as Count Fosco in The Woman in White on short notice after Crawford’s health forced him to leave the part due to illness.
Ball made his Broadway comeback in November 2005, as Count Fosco in The Woman in White, which had relocated from London’s West End. Ball, on the other hand, was forced to leave the show due to a viral infection allegedly induced by the fat suit required for the role, which reportedly elevated his body temperature by several degrees during the performance.
Ball made his New York City Opera debut as Reginald Bunthorne in Gilbert and Sullivan’s Patience in September 2005. Following an illness that forced him to quit Broadway’s The Woman in White, he spent the first quarter of 2006 on complete voice rest. Ball had performed in the Royal Court Theatre’s commemorative performance of The Rocky Horror Show by the middle of July. In June and July 2007, he appeared on Channel 4’s Richard & Judy to promote the ENO’s production of Kismet, in which he played a prominent part. On August 27, 2007, he performed as a solo performer for the BBC at London’s Royal Albert Hall in a contentious ‘Musical Theatre’ Prom. Ball sang a variety of musical theatre songs, including a few by Andrew Lloyd Webber. The show was broadcast live on BBC Four and BBC Radio 3 at the same time.
