Mohamed Salah Career
Salah began his career as a member of a local youth squad. His childhood idols include Cristiano Ronaldo, Zinedine Zidane, and Francesco Totti. Salah joined Al Mokawloon’s youth team at the age of 14 in 2006 after being seen by a scout who had come to watch another child play but was distracted by Salah. Salah had to miss a lot of school to make the three-hour drive to training. Salah was recognised by Mohamed Radwan, the first team manager at the time, when he was 15 years old, and he was instantly promoted to the senior squad. Salah needed a particular diet and exercise programme because his muscles were not fully developed due to his young age. Basel, a Swiss Super League club, had been keeping an eye on Salah for some time, so following his suspension from the Egyptian Premier League, the club organised a friendly match with the Egypt U-23 team. Salah scored twice in the match, which took place on March 16 at the Stadion Rankhof in Basel, despite only playing the second half. The Egyptians won 4–3. Salah was subsequently invited to stay in Basel for a week of training. Salah signed a four-year contract with Basel on 10 April 2012, with the start date set for 15 June 2012. He struggled to adjust at first, having arrived unable to communicate in the language and being signed as a substitute for Xherdan Shaqiri, a fan favourite.
Salah was a member of the Basel club that won the 2013 Uhrencup prior to the start of the Swiss Super League season in 2013–14. On July 13, 2013, Salah scored in his first league appearance of the season, against Aarau. On August 6, 2013, he scored his first Champions League goal against Maccabi Tel Aviv in the third qualifying round. Salah sparked outrage after the game when he appeared to purposefully avoid shaking hands with Israeli players in both the home and away legs. Salah signed a permanent contract with Roma for €15 million on August 3, 2016. On August 20, he scored his first goal of the season in a 4–0 triumph over Udinese in the season’s first game. Salah scored a hat-trick in a 3–0 win over Bologna on November 6, his first hat-trick in a club match. However, he was sidelined for the first half of December due to a damaged ankle ligament. On December 17, he came on as a half-time substitute in a 1–0 loss to championship rivals Juventus. Salah then went two months without scoring before ending his drought on February 19th, netting against Torino in a 4–1 victory.
Salah scored Liverpool’s second goal in a 4–1 triumph over Norwich City in the 2019–20 Premier League season opener on August 9, 2019. Salah scored Liverpool’s fifth and ultimately crucial penalty in a 5–4 penalty shoot-out win over Chelsea in the 2019 UEFA Super Cup on 14 August, after the game had finished 2–2 after extra time. Salah finished fifth in the 2019 Ballon d’Or voting polls in December, and later that month, he made his 100th Premier League appearance, marking the occasion with a goal and an assist in Liverpool’s 3–0 win over Bournemouth. Liverpool won the 2019 FIFA Club World Cup later that month, with Salah winning the Golden Ball award for Player of the Tournament. Salah scored two goals against West Ham on January 31, 2021, to become the fifth Liverpool player to score more than 20 goals in four straight seasons, and the first since Ian Rush did so six times between 1981–82 and 1986–87. Furthermore, his goal in the 68th minute of that game was chosen Premier League Goal of the Month later that month. He became the first Liverpool player to reach the 20-goal mark for a third season on April 24, scoring in a 1–1 draw with Newcastle United. He scored in a 4–2 away triumph over Manchester United on May 13th, his team’s first away win since March 2014.
