In 1985, Astley was a drummer in the FBI soul band, which featured Morris on guitar. They were a well-known local band who performed in bars and clubs, composing and playing their own songs. When FBI’s lead singer quit the band and Morris went back to his hairdressing business, Astley offered to take over as lead vocalist. This is when record producer Pete Waterman saw him and convinced him to move to London to work at the Pete Waterman Limited (PWL) studio, with RCA Tracks releasing his records. Astley learned about the recoring process from the Stock Aitken Waterman (SAW) production team of Mike Stock, Matt Aitken, and Pete Waterman. His debut song, “When You Gonna,” was a duet with Lisa Carter and was released with minimal fanfare. It failed to chart. “Never Gonna Give You Up,” recorded on New Year’s Day 1987 and released eight months later in August, was his debut solo release. The song was an instant hit because to Astley’s trademark rich, deep voice coupled with dance-pop, spending five weeks at the top of the British charts and becoming the year’s best-selling single. The song was also an international smash, reaching number one in 24 countries, including the United States, Australia, and West Germany. It was the first of 13 top 30 hit songs for him globally. The album Whenever You Need Somebody, which featured four songs written by Astley, debuted at No. 1 in the UK and Australia and No. 10 in the US in November 1987. In the United Kingdom and Canada, it was certified 4x Platinum, while in the United States, it was certified 2x Platinum. Whenever You Need Someone sold 15.2 million copies worldwide, making Astley the year’s best-selling British artist.
By 1990, Astley had chosen to put his dance-pop days behind and pursue his true calling: soul music. He changed his appearance as a result of the shift in musical genre, discarding the boy next door aspect, growing his hair, and portraying himself as a mature and dedicated artist. In 1991, he released his third album, Free, which featured duets with Elton John. It had three singles and peaked at No. 9 in the United Kingdom and No. 31 in the United States. For the first time in 14 years, Astley went on tour in 2004, which led to a record deal with Sony BMG. In March 2005, Astley released Portrait, a collection of cover songs that included “Vincent,” “Nature Boy,” and “Close to You.” The album was little marketed since Astley and Sony BMG were displeased with the outcome, yet it nevertheless managed to reach No. 26 on the UK Albums Chart. The Ultimate Collection: Rick Astley was published by Sony BMG in April 2008, and by early May, it had climbed to #17 on the UK Top 40 Albums Chart, despite Astley’s lack of marketing. “Keep Singing,” the first single from Astley’s upcoming album 50, was released in April 2016.
