Samantha Barks Career
Tourism Minister Adrian Earnshaw nicknamed the Isle of Man the “Isle of Sam” on April 29, 2008, at the halfway mark of the tournament. Following a renaming ceremony, welcome signs at Ronaldsway Airport and Douglas Sea Terminal were altered.
Barks sang “Defying Gravity” from the musical Wicked in week eight of the programme, and in the week preceding up to it, she received support from American actress Idina Menzel, who rose to stardom for her portrayal of Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West in Wicked.
Barks received the fewest public votes in week nine, forcing her to compete in the sing-off with Rachel Tucker. They performed “Memory,” a song from the show Cats. Andrew Lloyd Webber elected to save Barks while removing Tucker from the show, stating, “Cameron and I were just talking about how great both of you would be as Nancys last night, and now I’m in this situation. But I need to make a decision, and I need to consider where the show will ultimately go for Cameron, and I think I’ll have to go with you, Samantha.”
The Nancy finalists sat for marketing photos recreating some of Madonna’s classic poses in the week leading up to the two-part final on May 31. In London, each Nancy had a “Master Class” with Liza Minnelli.
Barks was revealed as the third place finisher at the end of part one of the final, with Andrew Lloyd Webber commenting, “What’s more, I was expecting this to happen. But, Samantha, you’ve done so well to get this far.” According to Barks, “It’s been the most incredible adventure of my life. Thank you to everyone who helped make it such a success, especially the panel.”
Barks sang the Isle of Man National Anthem “O Land At Our Birth” on Senior Race Day of the Isle of Man TT in June 2008, one month after I’d Do Anything concluded. From August 29, 2008 to July 11, 2009, Barks was cast in the lead role of Sally Bowles in the UK tour of Cabaret. In February 2009, Barks performed at the Theatregoers Choice Awards with her I’d Do Anything co-stars Sarah Lark and Jodie Prenger.
