The Walt Disney Company Wiki/Bio

The Walt Disney Company (frequent metonym: the House of Mouse, the Mouse House, or the Mouse) is an American diversified global mass media and entertainment corporation based in Burbank, California. The Walt Disney Company was started on October 16, 1923, by brothers Walt and Roy O. Disney as the Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio; it then changed its name to The Walt Disney Studio and Walt Disney Productions before becoming The Walt Disney Company in 1986. Disney has been forming and acquiring business divisions since the 1980s in order to offer more mature material than is generally associated with its iconic family-oriented brands. The Walt Disney Studios, which encompasses Walt Disney Pictures, Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar, Marvel Studios, Lucasfilm, 20th Century Studios, 20th Century Animation, and Searchlight Pictures, is the company’s film studio sector. Television, broadcasting, streaming media, theme park resorts, consumer items, publishing, and overseas operations are among Disney’s other major business segments. Disney owns and operates the ABC broadcast network, as well as cable television networks like Disney Channel, ESPN, Freeform, FX, and National Geographic; publishing, merchandising, music, and theatre divisions; direct-to-consumer streaming services like Disney+, Hulu, ESPN+, and Hotstar; and Disney Parks, Experiences, and Products, which includes 14 theme parks, resort hotels, and other attractions. Mickey Mouse is a cartoon character created by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks in 1928.

Walt Disney, an animator from Kansas City, Missouri, developed a short film called Alice’s Wonderland in early 1923 that featured child actress Virginia Davis interacting with animated creatures. After his previous company, Laugh-O-Gram Studio, went bankrupt in 1923, Disney came to Hollywood to join his brother, Roy O. Disney. Margaret J. Winkler of M.J. Winkler Productions contacted Disney about distributing a whole series of Alice Comedies that she had acquired for $1,500 per reel with Disney as a producing partner. In the same year, Walt and Roy Disney founded Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio. After Alice, there were further animated films. With the completion of the Disney s in January 1926, While on a train travelling to California in 1928, Disney came up with the notion of a mouse character named Mortimer to help him cope with the loss of Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. The mouse was eventually renamed Mickey Mouse (because Disney’s wife, Lillian, disliked the sound of ‘Mortimer Mouse’) and went on to appear in other Disney films. Ub Iwerks improved on Walt Disney’s original Mickey Mouse design. Pat Powers’ distribution business released Disney’s first sound film, Steamboat Willie, a Mickey Mouse cartoon, on November 18, 1928[ChWDC 3]. After Plane Crazy and The Gallopin’ Gaucho, it was the first Mickey Mouse sound animation to be released, but only the third to be made. In 1934, Disney began work on his first feature-length animated picture, wanting to push the possibilities of animation even farther. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, which took three years to make, opened in December 1937 and became the highest-grossing picture of the period by 1939. After United Artists failed to get future television rights to the Disney cartoons, RKO Radio Pictures took over distribution of Disney’s property in July 1937. Disney used the money made from Snow White to build a new 51-acre (210,000 m2) studio facility in Burbank, California. The company’s new headquarters, the Walt Disney Studios, opened in this year.

Career

Walt Disney Productions and the Coca-Cola Company collaborated on the NBC television network programme One Hour in Wonderland in December 1950, which was Disney’s first foray into television. The ABC network premiered Disney’s first regular television series in October 1954. In 1954, Walt Disney utilised his Disneyland series to debut what would become Disneyland, a concept out of a desire for a location where both parents and children could have a good time. Walt Disney officially opened Disneyland to the public on July 18, 1955. Following Walt’s death, Roy O. Disney became the company’s chairman, CEO, and president. In honour of his brother and his goal, he renamed Disney World “Walt Disney World” as one of his first acts. Walt’s final two projects, the animated blockbuster The Jungle Book and the musical The Happiest Millionaire, were released in 1967. In the late 1960s, the company released a series of comedies, notably The Love Bug (1969’s highest-grossing film) and The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes (1969), starring Kurt Russell, another youthful Disney find. The Aristocats, Disney’s first “post-Walt” animated picture, was released in the 1970s, followed by a return to fantasy. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Walt Disney World received a lot of attention from the firm. EPCOT Center, the second Walt Disney World theme park, was announced in 1978, and it was set to open in October 1982. EPCOT Center was designed as a “permanent World’s Fair,” complete with exhibits sponsored by major American firms and pavilions based on the cultures of different countries, and was inspired by Walt Disney’s vision of a futuristic model city. The Oriental Land Company teamed up with Walt Disney Productions to create Tokyo Disneyland, the first Disney theme park outside of the United States, which opened in April 1983.

Bob Iger succeeded Eisner as CEO of Disney on October 1, 2005. Chicken Little, Walt Disney Feature Animation’s first 3D animated picture, was released on November 4th. Disney announced on January 23, 2006 that it would purchase Pixar in an all-stock deal worth $7.4 billion. On May 5, the acquisition was completed, and Steve Jobs, who was Pixar’s CEO and had a 50.1 percent interest in the firm, transferred to Disney’s board of directors as the business’s largest individual shareholder, with a 7% holding. Pixar Animation Studios’ President, Ed Catmull, has taken over. John Lasseter, a former executive vice president of Pixar Animation Studios, has been named chief creative officer of Walt Disney Animation Studios.  Disney Parks, Experiences, and Products and Direct-to-Consumer & International were created as part of a strategic reorganisation of the corporation that began in March 2018. Parks & Consumer Products was formed by combining Parks & Resorts with Consumer Products & Interactive Media. While Disney International and worldwide sales, distribution, and streaming operations from Disney-ABC TV Group and Studios Entertainment, as well as Disney Digital Network, were transferred to Direct-to-Consumer & International. The New York Times said the restructure was done in anticipation of the 21st Century Fox acquisition since CEO Bob Iger described it as “strategically positioned our companies for the future.” Disney selected Bob Chapek as CEO to succeed Iger on February 25, 2020, with immediate effect. During the transition phase through 2021, Iger accepted the post of Executive Chairman, in which he would manage the company’s creative side while simultaneously continuing to serve as Chairman of the Board. Iger returned to the firm’s operational duties as executive chairman in April 2020 to assist the firm during the COVID-19 epidemic, while Chapek was appointed to the board of directors. In addition, in reaction to the COVID-19 recession, the business declared that it will suspend pay for over 100,000 employees (“cast members”) at Disney Parks, Experiences, and Products. Due to the shutdown of Disney parks during the COVID-19 pandemic, the company’s earnings fell by 63 percent in the fiscal second quarter of 2020, resulting in a $1.4 billion loss. In addition, the Parks, Experiences, and Products sector had a $1 billion sales drop. The firm said in September 2020 that it will lay off 28,000 employees in Florida and California. Josh D’Amaro, Disney’s park chairman, claims that “We had thought that this crisis would be brief and that we would be able to rapidly recover and get back to normal. We discover that this is not the case seven months later.” Two-thirds of the staff, according to D’Amaro, are unionised. Disney selected Alan Bergman as chairman of its Disney Studios Content division, which oversees its film studios, in December 2020. Disney launched a new branch called 20th Television Animation in March 2021 that would specialise on adult animation.
