United Parcel Service Wiki/Bio
United Parcel Service (UPS, stylised as ups) is a worldwide shipping and receiving and supply chain management corporation headquartered in the United States. It was formed in 1907. UPS began as the American Messenger Firm, a telegraph firm, and has since evolved to become a Fortune 500 company and one of the world’s largest transportation services. Today, UPS is most recognised for its ground shipping services and the UPS Store, a retail network that facilitates UPS packages while also providing small business equipment. UPS also offers overnight and 2-day air shipment, as well as delivery to PO Boxes through UPS SurePost, a company that sends goods to the US Postal Service for lamination. UPS is the world’s most profitable courier firm, with annual revenues of over $85 billion USD in 2020, well ahead of competitors DHL and FedEx. According to preliminary data from ACI, UPS Worldport in Louisville, Kentucky, is the world’s fifth busiest airport for cargo traffic, and the third busiest in the United States, after FedEx’s Memphis Superhub and Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport.
James Casey and Claude Ryan formed the American Messenger Company in Seattle, Washington, on August 28, 1907, with a $100 debt. The majority of deliveries were performed on foot at the time, with bicycles being employed for larger excursions. The American Messenger Company specialised in package delivery to retail establishments, as well as special delivery mail for its main client, the United States Postal Service. The firm purchased its first delivery vehicle, a Model T Ford, in 1913. Casey and Ryan joined with Evert McCabe, a rival, to establish Merchants Parcel Delivery. Consolidated delivery, which combines parcels addressed to a specific neighbourhood onto one delivery truck, was also established. Charlie Soderstrom joined Merchants Parcel Delivery in 1916, bringing more cars into the expanding delivery service. The corporation extended outside of Seattle for the first time in 1919, to Oakland, California, and changed its name to United Parcel Service. United Parcel Service was changed to remind the corporation that its expanding operations were still under the same organisation, and Parcel defined the sort of business it offered as part of its Service. In 1922, a firm in Los Angeles, California, purchased common carrier service.
UPS became one of the few common carrier service providers in the United States. A consolidated service began in New York City in 1930, and other major cities in the East and Midwest followed soon after. UPS was in direct rivalry with USPS and the Interstate Commerce Commission due to the usage of common carrier for all customers’ deliveries. The common carrier service was used in cities where UPS may utilise it without the ICC’s or state trade commissioners’ permission. In 1953, UPS used common carrier status for the first time outside of California, in Chicago, Illinois. Private airlines were the first to deploy UPS air service in 1929. However, The Great Depression and a lack of volume ended the air service. UPS relocated its headquarters to Greenwich, Connecticut, in 1975, and began serving the whole United States’ 48 contiguous states. UPS became the first package delivery firm to serve every address in the contiguous United States as a result of its growth. UPS also expanded internationally in 1975, establishing facilities in Canada. On February 28, UPS Ltd. (later renamed to UPS Canada Ltd.) opened its doors in Toronto, Ontario, and it is now headquartered in Burlington, Ontario. UPS launched a domestic service in West Germany in 1976.
UPS bought SonicAir in 1995 to compete with Choice Logistics in the service parts logistics market. UPS Logistics Group was established the same year to help customers with worldwide supply chain management services and consultancy. UPS Capital was founded in 1998 to help businesses thrive by providing a broad menu of integrated financial services through UPS. UPS stated on August 5, 2005 that it had finalised the purchase of Overnite Transportation, a less-than-truckload (LTL) trucking firm, for US$1.25 billion. On August 4, 2005, the FTC and Overnite stockholders authorised this. UPS began offering nonstop delivery service between Guangzh and Hong Kong in 2005. In 2008, All Nippon Airways and UPS, both members of the Star Alliance, created a cargo alliance and code-share to carry member goods, comparable to an airline alliance. UPS announced its intention to purchase TNT Express for $6.8 billion on March 19, 2012, in order to assist grow its footprint in European and Asian markets. The agreement, however, fell through in January 2013, when it was revealed that UPS had failed to get clearance from the European Commission and had so been denied on competition grounds. UPS saw a 21 percent increase in fourth-quarter revenue to $24.9 billion in 2021, following the company’s strategy to target smaller clients to maximise profitability amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
